The King Air B200 may be the most trusted twin turboprop ever built. Produced from 1981 across two decades and thousands of airframes, it combines a pressurised seven-to-ten-seat cabin, 1,580 NM of range and the PT6A's legendary tolerance for hard, hot, unpaved work.
It will operate from gravel strips shorter than 3,500 feet, which is why the type is everywhere aviation is difficult.
The aircraft
The King Air line began in 1964 with the Model 90 and has been in continuous production ever since — the longest run of any business turboprop family. The Model 200 “Super King Air” was its decisive step up: design work started in 1970, the prototype flew on 27 October 1972, certification followed in December 1973 and the first civil delivery came in February 1974. Against the earlier 100 series it brought the now-familiar T-tail, a bigger wing, more power and a higher operating ceiling, and it quickly became the default twin turboprop for governments, air forces and operators working far from good infrastructure.
The B200 arrived in 1981 with PT6A-42 engines and four-blade propellers, lifting cruise and climb performance without touching the airframe's essential character. It stayed in production for over two decades before handing over to the B200GT, and the wider 200/300-series family has now passed four thousand airframes — a fleet so large that no serious maintenance market on any continent is without King Air capability.
That scale is the type's real significance. The B200 was never the fastest or newest thing on the ramp; it was the aircraft that could be dispatched, supported and crewed anywhere, decade after decade. In Africa it carried freight, ministers, patients and survey gear off the same gravel strips, and it still does.

The broker’s view
In Africa the B200 is close to a currency: every operator knows it, every maintenance organisation can support it, and a well-documented example sells in any market weather. Engine times against TBO and corrosion history are the value drivers; cosmetics are noise.
The type's ubiquity also means real choice — we routinely place B200s matched to spray, survey, medevac and executive roles, which price differently.
The family
The 1974 original, mostly with PT6A-41 engines and three-blade propellers. Early serials are now working aircraft priced accordingly; logbook completeness and corrosion history matter far more than the model year.
From 1981: PT6A-42 engines and four-blade props for better cruise and hot-and-high climb. The heart of the used market — two decades of production means real choice in configuration, avionics and pedigree.
From 2008, with PT6A-52 engines that hold power better at altitude and in heat — noticeably stronger climb and high-altitude cruise. A meaningful step for hot-and-high operators, priced accordingly.
Certified 2011: composite propellers and BLR winglets over the GT's engines, trimming runway requirements and improving efficiency. Factory Pro Line 21 avionics throughout the run.
The current model, certified 2021, adds Pro Line Fusion avionics, ThrustSense autothrottle and a refreshed cabin. Late-model 250s and 260s trade close to new pricing because supply is thin.

Direct costs sit well below any comparable jet: two PT6A-42s burn modest fuel, parts are commodity-priced through a vast fleet, and any competent turboprop shop can maintain one. The engines' overhaul cycle is the big scheduled item — budget against it rather than being surprised by it.
The PC-12 is cheaper to run on one engine and has the bigger cargo door; the B200 offers twin-engine redundancy, better climb, and a stronger case over water, at night and in hot-and-high Africa. Mission and personal risk appetite decide it — both hold value well.
Yes — Garmin G1000 NXi retrofits are well established for the B200 and transform an analogue or early-EFIS cockpit into a current one. An upgraded panel widens the buyer pool noticeably at resale, and typically returns a healthy share of its cost.
