How far can a private jet fly? The short answer: anywhere from about 800 NM for a small turboprop to 7,500 NM for the longest-legged ultra-long-range jet — enough to pair almost any two cities on Earth with one stop, and a surprising number of them with none. The longer answer, and the one that actually matters when you are buying, is that the figure on the brochure is a carefully constructed best case. Knowing how it is constructed is worth more to a buyer than the figure itself.
What the published range actually assumes
When a manufacturer quotes maximum range, the number comes from a specific, standardised scenario, and every part of it flatters the result. The aircraft flies at long-range cruise speed — the speed that maximises miles per kilogram of fuel, not the speed the brochure photographs suggest. It carries a stated passenger count, typically four or eight, never a full cabin with full baggage. The atmosphere is ISA — the international standard day, no warmer, no colder. And the wind is zero, which it never is.
NBAA IFR reserves, in plain language
The one genuinely conservative ingredient is the reserve fuel. Most business jet ranges are quoted with NBAA IFR reserves: a standardised profile in which the aircraft flies the whole trip, misses the approach at the destination, climbs away, diverts to an alternate airport a set distance off, and still lands with holding fuel aboard. Historically that alternate sat 200 NM away; most manufacturers now publish the 100 NM-alternate version, which flatters the headline slightly. Either way, the point stands: a jet at maximum published range does not arrive running on fumes — the reserve is built into the figure. What is not built in is everything that happens between the brochure and a real flight plan.

Wind
Range is quoted through the air; you travel over the ground. The arithmetic is unforgiving: a 50 kt average headwind on a twelve-hour sector costs 600 NM of ground covered — roughly the range of a whole class of aircraft, gone. Westbound crossings against the winter westerlies routinely plan an hour or more longer than the same route flown east. This is why the same aircraft that flies London to New York non-stop all summer may look at a fuel stop in January, and why we tell clients to plan the mission on its worst plausible wind, not its average.
Speed
Every jet has two cruise numbers, and the gap between them is the most underrated fact in the brochure. Drag rises steeply as an aircraft approaches its maximum operating Mach, so the last few points of speed are bought with disproportionate fuel. The Gulfstream G650ER makes the trade explicit: 7,500 NM at Mach 0.85, but roughly 6,400 NM at its Mach 0.90 high-speed cruise. Around six per cent more speed costs about fifteen per cent of the range. On a three-hour sector, fly fast — the fuel penalty buys you minutes that matter. On a thirteen-hour sector, the long-range cruise speed is what makes the flight possible at all.
Weight, weather and the MEL
Fill every seat, load the baggage bay and the aircraft either gives up fuel or gives up runway performance — on many types you cannot carry full fuel and full payload at once. Weather adds its own tax: routing around storm systems, flying below optimum altitude because the airway is congested, running engine and wing anti-ice for hours. And an aircraft dispatched with an inoperative item under its minimum equipment list can carry an altitude or fuel penalty that quietly shortens its legs. None of these appear on a specification sheet; all of them appear on flight plans.
Hot and high — the African correction
This one we live with daily. Johannesburg sits at 5,558 ft, and on a summer afternoon the density altitude can run several thousand feet higher still. Thin air means less thrust and less lift, so the maximum weight at which the aircraft can legally and safely depart falls — and the weight that gets left behind is fuel. An aircraft that makes its published range out of a sea-level runway in Europe may need a meaningful haircut departing the Highveld in December. Johannesburg to London is roughly 4,900 NM on the great circle; on paper several large-cabin jets appear to reach it, but flown westbound-equivalent margins, hot-and-high departure weights and real reserves, it is honest ultra-long-range territory. This is the sort of correction a broker who flies these sectors makes for you before you buy, not after.

Private jet range, class by class
With the caveats made, the classes sort themselves out cleanly. These are the published figures we use across our aircraft guide:
- Turboprops — roughly 800 to 1,800 NM. A Grand Caravan EX reaches 912 NM, a King Air B200 1,580 NM, and a PC-12 at 1,803 NM or King Air 350 at 1,806 NM sit in genuine light-jet territory — while using strips no jet will ever see.
- Light jets — roughly 1,800 to 2,100 NM. Two to three-hour sectors: Johannesburg to Nairobi, London to Athens. The Citation Excel manages 1,839 NM; the Phenom 300 tops the class at 2,010 NM.
- Midsize — roughly 2,100 to 2,800 NM. A Citation XLS+ at 2,100 NM or a Hawker 900XP at 2,818 NM covers most of a continent from anywhere on it.
- Super-midsize — around 3,200 NM. The Challenger 350 crosses the United States, or links Johannesburg with Lagos, non-stop.
- Large cabin — roughly 4,000 to 5,200 NM. A Falcon 2000LXS at 4,000 NM, a Gulfstream GIV at 4,220 NM or a Global 5000 at 5,200 NM makes Africa–Europe and transatlantic sectors routine.
- Ultra-long-range — 5,950 to 7,500 NM. The Falcon 7X (5,950 NM), Global 6000 (6,000 NM), Falcon 8X (6,450 NM), Global Express (6,700 NM) and G550 (6,750 NM) pair almost any two continents; the G650ER at 7,500 NM makes fifteen-hour city pairs possible.

The distance record for a purpose-built business jet belongs to the G650ER: Singapore to Tucson, Arizona in 2019, covering 8,379 NM in 15 hours and 23 minutes — and landing with fuel still aboard above NBAA IFR reserves. Notice that the distance flown exceeds the aircraft’s published 7,500 NM. The difference was the jet stream: records are flown eastbound for a reason, with the winds doing part of the work. It proves the margin is real — and it proves, just as neatly, that wind moves the answer by hundreds of miles in either direction. Your westbound flight plan will not be so lucky.
Why business jets fly straighter than airliners
One quiet advantage rarely makes the brochures. Twin-engined airliners historically needed ETOPS approval to fly long over-water legs far from a diversion airport, which bent their routes toward land. Privately operated business jets are generally outside the ETOPS regime altogether — commercial charter rules differ, and oceanic sectors still demand the right navigation and survival equipment — but for a private owner the practical effect is close to full great-circle freedom across oceans and remote airspace. The range you buy converts into routing flexibility an airline schedule cannot match, which is precisely what the figure is for.
How much range should you actually buy?
The most expensive mistake we see is buying range for the trip taken once a year rather than the trips taken every week. The premium for an ultra-long-range cabin over a large one — in capital, fuel, crew and maintenance — is enormous, and chartering the annual fourteen-hour mission is almost always cheaper than owning it. The arithmetic is laid out in what a private jet really costs. Our working rules:
- Write down your last twenty flights before you look at a single listing. The aircraft that fits them is the right one.
- If your longest regular sector exceeds about 85 per cent of an aircraft’s published range, look at the next aircraft up — the margin is what absorbs winter winds, full cabins and hot-and-high departures.
- If most sectors are short and the strips are rough, range is the wrong question entirely — read jet or turboprop first.
- Once the class is settled, verify the specific airframe’s real-world performance during the buying process — engines, modifications and age all move the practical number.
